A common misconception about office hours is that they’re only there for students struggling in the class who need extra help. While office hours are a great resource for getting your questions and concerns dealt with one-on-one, they’re also a great way to get to know your professors. You can share your interests, get their insights, and become more memorable; that way, you can turn to them if you find yourself struggling in the future (or if things are going well and you’d like a letter of recommendation for an internship, job, or study abroad opportunity). Besides, your professor will really appreciate your taking the time and initiative to establish that working relationship. You may not develop a Harry Potter/Dumbledore-esque relationship (dare to dream), but you could come close!
Seven Questions to Ask Your Professor During Office Hours
1. What made you want to teach this class?
2. What’s the most important thing I can take away from this class?
3. How would you ask us about this topic on an exam?
4. How can I improve my grade?
5. Are there any on-campus resources you’d suggest I look into, such as tutors or study groups?
6. I didn’t quite understand X in class. Can you explain it to me again?
7. I really love this subject. Are there any opportunities for me to get more involved in it on or off campus?
